Children and older pediatric patients receiving tube feeds can exhibit significant medical complexity and fragility. The availability of blenderized formula (both homemade and commercial) can provide appropriate, complete nutrition to the patient while decreasing clinical symptoms related to many digestive disorders. While the initiation of blenderized formula may seem to be a foreign concept to some, there is a growing wealth of literature to support the safety, efficacy, and feasibility of blenderized tube feeds in children and older pediatric patients preparing for the transition to adult care who require tube feeds. Providers and caregivers of children receiving tube feeds have demonstrated knowledge gaps in the indications for and management of blenderized formula. Moreover, there is a need to engage multi-disciplinary colleagues in the transition care of children with medical complexity receiving blended tube feeds to the adult model when age and family scenarios permit.
