Its not every day you run into one of your all-time heroes. Michael Pollan has committed himself to spreading the truth about food and the impact of nutrition on health as well as the impact of how we produce our food on the greater ecosystem. Recently, at an Institute for Functional Medicine event in San Francisco, I got the chance to shake his hand and talk to him about my belief in what hes doing. I also got to tell him a little bit about Functional Formularies and Liquid Hope.
It was great to share our story with him and Michael was very kind, listening intently and providing encouragement. It served as great confirmation for me that what were doing has value far beyond making and selling a product. Meeting and talking to someone like Michael who has so much passion for clean eating, it helps reinforce our mission. I know that, because of Liquid Hope, people who rely on enteral feeding have a healthy choice. It simply isnt fair for people who, through injury or disease, must rely on tube feeding to be forced to put unhealthy amounts of sugar, along with harmful additives into their bodies because there is no other alternative.
One of my favorite tips from Michael that I reference often while talking with others is, Don't eat anything your great-grandmother wouldn't recognize as food. That is great advice but for those on feeding tubes, until now, there was no opportunity for patients to have choice. In the food they were being given. If youre not familiar with commercial formulas, this would have been your choice before Liquid Hope:
Water, Corn Maltodextrin, Sugar, Milk Protein Concentrate, Canola Oil, Soy Protein Isolate, Corn Oil, Pea Protein Concentrate. Less than 0.5% of the Following: Natural & Artificial Flavor, Magnesium Phosphate, Potassium Citrate, Soy Lecithin, Sodium Citrate, Potassium Chloride, Calcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Salt, Choline Chloride, Ascorbic Acid, Potassium Hydroxide, Carrageenan, Ferrous Sulfate, dl-Alpha-Tocopheryl Acetate, Zinc Sulfate, Niacinamide, Manganese Sulfate, Calcium Pantothenate, Cupric Sulfate, Vitamin A Palmitate, Thiamine Chloride Hydrochloride, Pyridoxine Hydrochloride, Riboflavin, Chromium Chloride, Folic Acid, Sodium Molybdate, Biotin, Sodium Selenate, Potassium Iodide, Phylloquinone, Vitamin D3, and Cyanocobalamin.
Our mission here at Functional Formularies is to simply to offer those who need real nutrition at the most critical time, an option.
So, thank you Michael for your words of encouragement and please, keep shining the light on the problems with industrialized food.
I only hope I have the opportunity to meet Michael Pollan again some day.
